Abstract

This study was carried out to elucidate the seed coat scarification effects and investigate the reversible and the irreversible pregermination stages in order to produce better primed zoysiagrass (Zoysia japonica Steud.) seeds. Low germination rates by low concentration of KOH solution were caused by insufficient scarification, and the treatments over 60 min were injurious to zoysiagrass seeds. Pregermination processes of zoysiagrass seeds were classified into five stages from seed coat split to coleoptile and radicle elongation about 7 §® and 5 §®, respectively, and the irreversible phases were henceforth pregermination III stage. Dehydrated seeds of pregermination III stage were able to germinate even under poor conditions such as some low temperatures and dryness. Primed seeds after 24 hr presoaking and 12 hr pregermination showed the highest germination capability in the dark condition at 35¡É and consisted of irreversible pregermination III stage seeds.
